@gramps no that's exactly what I wanted to hear!
I have read quite a few places saying that VR is invaluable even on support so I wasn't sure, but @Mikechappers post and everybody else who's posted has told me what I wanted to hear, that VR isn't essential and so I'll go for the 500.
@AdamSi Sorry what I mean is that I can afford the 500mm with no VR (seen for £2500) but the VR versions I've seen are about £4500 so basically £2k more.
