Not sure what to do at the minute, i have a 400d and am in 2 minds wether to upgrade to a 50d or buy better glass.... Opinions please....................

glass every time
unless there's something about the body that you feel is a limiting factor
but it's nearly always the glass

IMHO
YMMV

Surely the answer depends a bit on what glass the OP already has, and what he intends to do with the camera?
I was kinda thinking of the same dilema, (400d, 50mm/1.8, 17-55, 28-135IS, 70-300IS), and my dilema was that I wanted more reach (100-400L), and better ISO handling (50d). However, a firmware upgrade on the 400d appears to have improved the grain at 1600

Andy77 what is your reasons for chosing the 50d (or is it just latest and greatest?), and what glass would you consider instead?

I was also in the same situation.

With me having a canon 10-22, sigma 24-70 f2.8, and a 70-200 F4L, alongside a 580 EX2, the on board flash control, and the glass i had made me want to upgrade. (I think i have decent glass)

I looked at the 40d, and there are a few extra features on the 50d which i like, such as the flash control, the extra resolution, slightly better ISO performance at high ISOs (Which is the main reason for upgrading) and a more rugged feel made me want to upgrade.

i could have got the 40d, but i wanted the newer body.

I went from a 450D to the 50D and found that the 50D really highlighted the poor quality of some of my lenses (which have since been disposed of). It also highlighted the great IQ of my Sigma 10-20, Canon 24-105 and 100-400...

In my honest opinion, if you go to a 50D with poor/mediocre lenses, when pixel-peeping (which we all do...) you will find worse images than you had before you upgraded!

I've got a 350d and have just had the same question running round my head .. and ... I got the glass .. and OMG has it been worth it, the quality of image has jumped tremendously, I will upgrade the body at some point, but will now save for a 5d or suchlike, or a 50d .. dunno yet .. see which way my photography is going at the time .. but glass is a massive step forward :)

thanks for all your replys, you've got me wanting new glass now lol....

Got to be glass unless you need extra features that you don't currently have. When I bought my D200 plus 3 lenses originally I paid about £1000 for the D200 plus I bought a 105, 18-200 and 50mm. ALL the lenses are now worth 20% MORE than I bought them for whereas the camera is worth 40% ish. Glass just holds its value whereas cameras just loose it. I know you are not buying them as an investment but if you spend it on glass you can always trade that later without loosing money. The glass matters more than the camera when it comes to taking a picture anyway!

forget 50D its a waste of money and you'd need better glass from it anyway.

go for a 40D if you want an upgrade in fps, buffer and build quality everything else is pretty much the same

Whats your budget and what lenses do you have at the moment? Glass is really expensive just now :(

Don't think I'd quite go that far - OK I'm biased :D

Off the top of my head, higher ISO and better noise performance, higher res rear screen, face detection in live view and live view has been tweaked, higher write speed to faster CF cards, 15Mpixels so you can crop more if required.

However it's a premium cost over the price to a 40D so that's a reasonable upgrade route.

What you will notice over the 400D is increased size, weight, bigger screen, better battery life and more features like flash control. easier accessibility to those features via the big wheel etc. With the bigger lenses the 40/50D feels better balanced than the 400D.
