Upgrade Q!!!!

I no there's a thread about upgrading from a 450d but!!!!
Could I pose the question at what point is the right time to think about upgrading! Or have I just answered my own question!

I'm now understanding manual controls have had my 450d for about 3 years what are the major differences in the next step up!
I'm never going to go full frame I doubt and don't really want a big camera as I use mine for holidays and day trips mainly, with the intention of doing a bit of wildlife photography as soon as I get a lens for the job!!

WOULD I BENEFIT!!!!

Think about it like buying a new car - you might sell a 2 seater sports car due to having kids and needing to ferry them about or you might be doing more mileage so need to look at a diesel.

What do you need from a camera that the 450D isn't doing for you ?

Well I'd say better results!! Isn't that why people upgrade???

but what specifically do you need to acheive the better results ?

a lot of the time people upgrade in the hope of better results when they actually just need either better lenses or more practice.

The areas where the 450D is weak are i) speed of focusing (though thats often more to do with the lens), and ii) speed and depth of the burst,

So if you do sports or action nature (BiFs etc) then it could well be the camera and an upgrade to either an xxD or the 7D might seriously improve your shots

however if you are mainly into portraits/landscape/macro etc then the chances are that a body upgrade wont actually help that much and you might be better putting your spendage on lenses - or photography trips or just saving it.

(on the other hand if you just suffer from shiny kit syndrome and you've got the cash you might as well upgrade because it will make you feel good, help the economy, and someone else can get the benefit of a second hand 450D)

Thanks that's very helpful I'm happy with my 450d but thought I may be missing out on the benefits of new technology think I might wait till I get the birdy lens and see how I get on!!

The only thing I can see Pete missed is a newer sensor with better ISO (low light ) quality if you take pics indoors or want to up the ISO for sports.
