Upgrade Sigma 120-400 to Canon?

Thinking of upgrading my Sigma 120-400 to a Canon Pro lens but am unsure if it will make a big enough difference to warrant it.

Having recently switched to a 5DMK2 from a 50D my other L lenses really seem to have come to life and produce fantastic images. The Sigma on the other hand produces sharp images but they just seem to lack a little something extra that the others have.

So was thinking of either the 300mm f4 and 1.4x extender or the 100-400mm. Looking at the shots I have taken with the Sigma they are all above 200mm and mostly at or around 400mm, and of either wildlife or air shows.

So my questions is which lens is going to the best bet, the zoom seems a bit of a waste given I will not use half its range so is the 300mm plus extender the way to go?

If you upgrade to the 100-400 you would not see much of a difference, if any.

I would recommend the 300mm f4 with the extender though if you do not need a zoom. The Canon prime will be sharper than the Sigma at 400mm + you can use it as a fats f4 lens if needed.

Possibly slightly better IQ from a Canon 400mm prime f5.6 or the 400mm DO (but that's ultra expensive) whether it's worth spending the extra cash is debateable though, depends how much cash you have

A vote for canon prime. Your 70-200 should cover the rest.

I'm not a Canon user, but I have friends who are. Canon 300mm F4 and 400mm F5.6 are fine lenses and I've never heard anything bad said against them. Get one and you will have to wash 'Sigma' out of your mouth with soap and water.
