Yes
Time to upgrade from my D40 :)

I'd love a D90 but not sure if I can justify the cost so have started to look at the D80 instead. Will mostlikely be a second hand camera I go for.

Is it realy worth the extra cost to go for the D90 over the D80?

I went from D60 to D300 :D

What's your budget?

Are you talking new or second hand?

Have you thought about the D200 as well?

Lots of options :)

From reading reviews the D90 is far far better than the D80.

Hopefully I'll have about £500 to upgrade with (after selling the D40).

Will be a second hand whatever I get.

Very tempting my friend. I'd like to try and squeez in a lens with my budget if I can..

what lenses do you have already and what is your current body limiting you to?

look to upgrade your lenses first if your body isn't causing you any issues, otherwise go for the best body you can afford imho :)

I have the kit 18-55mm lens plus a Sigma 55-200mm.

The main problem I find with the D40 is that it doesn't handle noise as good as I'd like. It only goes as low as ISO200 and produces lots of noise on anything over ISO400.

I'm now looking at the D200 too :)

Nowt wrong with used kit, albeit it takes time to find the right stuff (price/condition/etc)... My recently procured D90 body was way less than £500 quid; 7 months old, mint, <3000 clicks.

well TBH i'd invest in a few fast primes, f1.8's will do as the it gives you the option of keeping your ISO low. also what do you shoot as we could advise you on that?

d80 has lots of noise from iso400 .

That said, it's still a good body and is a jump up from a D40 especially the ability to use a wider range of Nikon-fit glass. I've had both in my time, albeit the '40 I had was a D40x, so it's a POV from experience

I understand that the D90 is just so much better than the D80 that there is realistically no choice but to get the D90.

That said I used a D80 last year and it was fantastic, but that only makes me wonder just how good the D90 is.

With your current set up I would be looking at replacing those lenses with things like the tamron 17-50mm f2.8 and a flash gun. I work with a D60 and it is worse for noise than the D40 but I just work around it by throwing light from the flash gun or using a fast lens.

I have a d60 but this week took delivery of a d90 upgrade.

It was a lot of money for me to spend and was wondering whether I'd return it once the courier delivered it. All I can say is 5minutes with it and there is not a chance of that, the iso capabilities, bigger viewfinder and bigger brighter LCD is an amazing step up I've not even got into the nitty gritty.

Dint get me wrong, the d60 is a great camera, but the d90 is in a different league!

I'd look out on here for a second hand d90, you won't regret it.

Looks like I can get a D200 with at least 1 lens for a lot less than a D90 body

Another reason I have been thinking of upgrading is the limmited lens availability for the D40 (at a reasonable price).

IAN..............kerso............just quoted me a LOW price on a NEW D90 body

the lowest I've found so far............

Ian Kerr is listed in our Classifieds Advertisers- send email to "Items Sold"

not bought anything big yet but I believe he issues a UK invoice which Nikon will honour for warranty

he comes HIGHLY recommended ............

Just found him and PM'd for a price, thanks :D

The d200 is nice and is a better body in terms of construction than the D90, but the 90 handles high isos better than the d200

Whilst these recommendations are all well and good, can I ask what sort of photography you do?

More landscape then anything else at the mo. Just started to play around with macro lately and would also like to do some 'people' stuff (family etc.).

Is high ISO lack of noise really vital then?

If it is,then the D90 would be my recommendation,if not,the D200 is an excellent camera.

I find that I'm having to use the tripod more and more now so would realy like something that can handle higher ISO.

Think the D200 will do the job for me :)

Thanks for all the input guys, much appreciated

Definately D90 imho your getting a lot of next gen kit in that body, the d200 is ace but you dont need the pro body and the d200's iso capability is not in the same league

TBH Damien, I always use a tripod for landscape,I do very little macro so can`t really comment on that. So high ISO shouldn`t be used anyway, unless you want the noise in the image for effect.

I use my D200 regularly because of the low base ISO,100 compared to 200 on the 300/700.The 200 is a very solid, reliable and capable camera, prices are good for s/h ones as well due to the recent new bodies by Nikon. It has its failings,as do all things, namely battery life and noise at anything over 800 being severe.

Just my thoughts on the matter.......:)

If you're looking at s/h -- one thing to consider is that the D200 can meter the old manual focus lenses, and there are some great MF lenses to be had for surprisingly little -- though as these lenses are FF, wider than 24mm gets expensive.

Just to show what I'm up against with the D40..

ISO800 @ 1/400, 200mm.

Think I've decided on a D200 with the kit 17-70mm and add a 50mm to it :)

Some would say even slightly better than the D300.

I went D60-D80-D90

Don't regret the last jump. Love it.

But unfortunately it will be replaced one day by a D700 or it's upgrade...or maybe even a D3 ;)
