I have a nikon d90 at the min and i am starting to need a 2nd body.
So the question is; Is there any point in going to a d300s or do u think i am better saving for a d700 i am changing lens soon so no problem there!

by the way am shooting Portraits mainly and my kids!

If you can afford it the D700 is the way to go. Just be sure that you buy lenses for FX not DX.
recently moved from Canon to D700, couldn't be happier. Only slight downside is the price of good glass. Mind you the 50mm 1.8 is a bargain, great for portraits. Can also reccomend the 28-70 2.8. Can be found used for around £700. Now discontinued in favour of 24-70 2.8 @£1150 ish
 
I have the same dilemma, after getting my bonus the wife has given sanction (in fact told me to just go and buy a D300s cos its what you always wanted!)

I have a D90 and D60, problem is I am not sure the D300s is a big enough jump from the D90 which in all honesty is a brilliant camera, that I am yet to reach the limits of.

Personally I dont think I have the need for FX, as the results from the D90 yield me great prints at A4 and even A3 if I dont crop too much, part of my thinking is that I'll wait until the D400 or maybe go for the D300s if the SB900 flashgun offer is repeated....I need a bit of a push to decide!

Am also contemplating whether I would get better value from a 70 - 200 f2.8 Sigma (but even then I have a 70-300 Nikon VR which does very well)

Update: I made the mistake of wandering on to the 700 owners thread and saw the pic of the showjump taken in an indoor arena. Sunday I will be at Plumpton in just such an arena taking pictures of my daughter, maybe I need to think further........

Maybe I'll just get the studio flash I have been hankering after for 20+ years!

You don't work in the banking industry do you? I couldn't get that off my salary, let alone a bonus!!!! Best of luck deciding
 
no i am a graphic designer and we had a good 6 months after last year, we all had a pay cut so my boss is paying us back! also got a cheaper company car!!

Rob, go for Nikon 24-70 if you can it will blow the sigma away..... :cool:

Really is there that much difference then? what about the 70-200 is that the same i might have to have a rethink!! :bang:

I've been in your situation, used a D300 for 18 months, and now have a D90 and D700. I also had a sigma 70-200 and now have a nikon 70-200 f2.8G.

My opinion is that the glass is all important. Once you've got used to the camera body there isn't much different in IQ between them, sure the D700 feels a better body, but I'll quite happily pick up the D90 without any hesitation.
The lenses are a different matter, the nikon professional range is simply, for me, worth the extra over the sigma equivalents, they are that good.
