Right, thanks to everyone who helped out on my last thread. I have decided I am definitely going to go for the 40D as soon as possible. :clap:

However, I am looking to start taking more landscape type shots and love the shots I have seen taken with a Sigma 10-20mm lens. I am pretty much decided on this over the Canon and other similar lenses.

Is it worth getting the 10-20mm lens and using it on the 350D or should I upgrade the body now and save up for the lens?

I fancy trying some "moving water" type shots with ND Grad Filters (think that's what I mean! correct me if I need something different!) and am worried that the 350D's low light performance in both AF and ISO will let me down?

Help much appreciated

PS as much as I would love both funds and SWMBO will not allow that!)

I'm stalking a few on the Bay now! Annoyingly some 40D's going for cheapish money at the mo! Swaying towards the lens at present.
 
If you want long exposure shots then the ISO and AF wont be an issue. You'll have time to set up the shot and expose long enough on a low ISO as to make both areas irrelevant :) I assume you will be tripod mounted.
If there is nothing else lacking in the 350D though and the upgrade was purely to facilitate these kind of shots then the lens would be the better option at this stage :)
 
Thanks jnO, I think I am just after a new gadget body wise. I am yet to really reach the limitations of the 350D. I will be using a tripod for the longer exposure shots and hadn't really thought about that with the ISO in mind.

Just got to grab a 10-20mm Sigma at a good price then!
 
Woo Hoo! Got one off E-Bay! Paid £252 for it including a Hoya Pro UV Filter. Not a bad deal I hope, I'm pleased anyhow. Hopefully the missus will let me have a play before chrimbo!!

Sounds like a bargain, I've got a sigma 10-20mm and it's a brilliant bit of kit.

Hoping the one I get isn't one of those. I suppose I could just as easily get a soft sample if I bought new. Is there an easy way to test to see if it is an especially soft sample or is it just really noticeable in pictures at certain apertures?
 
Congrats on the 10-20! (lucky git ;))unless you notice it in everyday images i wouldn't think it was faulty. The problem with wide angles is that people try them at shallow DOF and end up with the edges blurred for obvious reasons. If you must test it you have to use a tripod and a small aperture (f8- f11) and a cable release so that theres no camera shake in the equation.

Cheers mate, will give it a go with the above settings and on my tripod. Luckily enough picked up a cable release off ebay last week, will get chance to use it now!

Can't wait for it to arrive!!:clap:
 
I borrowed a 40D a few weeks ago with a view to doing the same upgrade and yest it is better at high ISO but not markedly so,at 100 & 200 ISO I could see no difference so I would go with the glass
 
£250 :clap: i've been watching these also...to go with the 50D i'm getting from mr Xmas...they seemed to be going for about £310...
 
Right, it has landed! Tested it out at 18mm side by side with my kit lens (so I could have a direct comparison - or as close as possible). Both at 100 ISO and F11 with 8 second exposure (pic was of our lounge!) and the 10-20 is noticeably sharper.

I'm hoping this means all is well and it isn't a soft example. Is there anything else I need to do to test it apart from a daylight shot?
