Upgrade to canon 1d mk 2

In an effort to get better wildlife shots I'm considering getting a secondhand canon 1d mk 2 to go with the canon 400mm f5.6 l I'll be ordering in the new year this will be a huge improvement on my1000d my question is can you see any reason not to bearing in mind I dont have the budget for a higher speced new canon

I don't see why not. The next step up for wildlife - 7D - is far more expensive.

Nope sounds like a great idea to me! Love my 1D2, getting far more keepers since swapping from 20D. I do sometimes miss the APS-C sensor though!

Sorry for the novice question but what difference is the sensor?

1D bodies have APC-H (1.3) crop sensors
7D, XXD, XXXD & XXXD bodies have APS-C (1.6) crop sensors
1Ds & 5bodies have full frame sensors

So my lenses are a bit shorter on the 1D than the 20D.

the bigger the crop the longer the focul length..


so your lenses become shall we say..longer.. the more crop you have.. like a 1.6

Not a major effect I would say, but I just like the extra reach I had with the 1.6 sensor. That said, it's wider at the wide end now so it all balances out!

Go for it, great body, it'll take you a little while to get used to the controls and don't forget any ef-s lenses you've got will not work but they are a bloody good camera.

One concern i have is, being an older camera the life left in it will be less the my 1000d , so what will go wrong with it and worse case the cost of repairs i hear of shutters needing replacing .

An older camera built to higher spec though.

Given the weather sealing, solid body and more long lasting shutter assembly, I'd put my money on a reasonable condition used 1D2 outliving your current 1000D from this point.

Great camera, you will notice loss of ability to use the higher ISO settings, I think it is probably 1 or 2 stops more noisy (I've not check it out accurately) but in good/medium light you will be fine. You will love the 8 frames per second and the very fast AF.

i wouldnt change mine for the world. and also high iso performance isnt bad atal, ive cranked it up to 1000+ in clubs without any problems atal. will blow you away compared to your 1000D. they are built like a tank, so dont worry about breaking it. As for getting the N like someone suggested, the only real difference is a bigger screen, if this isnt an issue to you, just get the original mark ii

1D Mark 2 is (bang for buck) a great camera.

The AF will be night and day compared to your existing body although navigating the buttons and menus (not very intuitive) will take a bit of getting used to. EF-S lenses (if you have any) are no good though.

Noise / ISO (sorry I'm not familiar with the 1000D) is about on a par with my 40D if that's any help ?

As for the 1.3 crop - you will loose a little bit of reach compared to your existing 1.6 crop body. That's not really a big issue unless you rely on heavy cropping in which case it's less forgiving compared to higher resolution / mega pixel cameras.

I planned to sell my 40D after getting a 1D2 but found for 'still birds' (when the 1D2 AF wasn't required) the 40D had the edge if cropping was needed so ended up keeping it.

If the 1.3 crop suits and you're not obliged to shoot in low light then it's a great body.

If you do need a new shutter (they are rated to 200,000 shots) then it isn't the end of the world. As a guide my old 1Ds needed a shutter, £220 inc VAT and a three day turnaround and it was ready to roll again.

If you go for it make sure you get a battery charger (a replacement is silly money). I use 7dayshop batteries in mine, about £14 each and seem every bit as good as OEM batteries. I've got 6 batteries and rotate them, never had an issue.

Also you might find that the camera won't fit in your existing camera bag, worth checking, my Stealth Reporter 400 for example, it will fit but is very snug removing it through the top zip.
