The D90 is basically just a "consumer" version of the D300, so performance will be broadly similar, in fact I've read reports of the D90 actually bettering the D300's high iso performance...
It's the pro build and plethora of pre set progs and function buttons you pay for on the D300, in a A P article they tested very close for image quality,which is superb, but he said if moneys no problem get the D300, if it's not a semi pro spec camera you want get the D90.... but if going for the D90 just don't handle the D300 as you'll want that!!!!!!!!!!
That's what I did, I have a D40 and was tempted to get the D90 but ended up getting a Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 which allows me to shot in low light with faster shutter speeds.
