Upgrades for Canon 18-55 IS 3.5-5.6 and Canon 75-300 4-5.6

I'm looking at upgrading these 2 lenses, mainly because the pictures they produce are too soft (Especially the 75-300) and are pretty slow.

I hear the Tamron 17-50 2.8 is an excellent lens and almost on par with an L series. (Would this also render my nifty fifty 1.8 useless except for really low light situations such as gigs?)

As for zoom lenses, i'm clueless!

Aside of spending bucket loads of cash on L series lenses, what options do I have?

If you mainly want low light performance and are prepaired to live without IS the Tamron 17-50 2.8 is really a no brainer IMHO.

For tele you'll really have to shell out for a large appature zoom but the Canon 55-250 IS is a good deal sharper than your 75-300 and has stabalisation for less than £150.

If you really wanted a large appature in the tele range then primes are a cheaper way of getting it, the 100mm f/2 for example is very well reguarded and can be hand for less than £300 used.
