upgrading dying 40D

My 40D is dying a slow and painful death :( firstly the shutter button went and had to be replaced now the connector pins are going I keep getting error messages regarding the pins and the camera has also started stuttering on auto-focus also it focuses in and out constantly and can't pick up a focus point.

Is a new 5D due soon? I was thinking 5D MK2 but 7D and 60D are cheaper options... I don't want to fork out on a 5D to find a new one is coming a couple of months later but at same time I really don't want to be without a serviceable camera for much longer as I feel naked without it.

I cant make a decision so hopefully someone can help me with my options. Thank you!

First thing you need to ask yourself is what you shoot, and if a 5D will be suiteable for this. Its not all +'s, slower FPS, full frame loss of range etc.

Secondly is, will you get the full benefits from the 5D, over the 7 or 60 ?

Thirdly is the same, will you get the full benefits over a 7 or 60D from a replacement 40D (just to play devils)

I have no idea about a new 5D sorry
 
Have you considered getting the camera serviced or cleaned the pins yourself? What is the shutter count?

I would ignore the rumours about any new cameras as we don't know what they are, what they will look like, and what they will perform like. There are rumours of a new 5D3, but there have been rumours of a 5D3 since the 5D2 was announced. I imagine that it will be announced in the next year, but no one knows whether one will be announced this year!

With regards to the 60D, 7D, and 5D2 there is quite a cost difference and each are aimed a different markets. What type of shots do you take?

Personally I would see the 60D as a step down from the 40D if you shoot sports, as the FPS is lower (6.5fps vs 5.3fps). But you would be gaining the 18MP sensor that has excellent high ISO ratings. The 7D has both the 18MP sensor and 8 FPS, but at extra cost.

The 5D2 is an excellent non-sports camera but it's FPS is limited (3.9).

At the end of the day the choice is yours - go to a camera shop or two and try them out!
