Upgrading from a D80

Getting a bad attack of upgraditus

Very pleased with my D80 and it still takes good shots. I do find the LCD a bit small and lacking in quality.

Is a D90 a big enough jump or should I hold out for a D7000 ?

The D90 was a real improvement over the D80 in several aspects and can be had for as little as £400. If you have a decent collection of glass though and you don't mind spending the £800 for a D7000 then it is worth every penny. Got mine a couple days ago and couldn't be happier.

The one thing I noticed straight away is how fast my otherwise sluggish lenses acquire focus. It pretty much gave a new lease of life to my Tamron 10-24 which was frustratingly slow with my D40 now it focuses in fractions of a second.

The screen on the back is amazing and the viewfinder massive and really bright. You can customise it till you drop and with steady hands and some decent lens it can capture a lot of detail.

It also feels better made than the D90 and it supposedly has better weather sealing.

I almost went for the D90 cause I was not sure I wanted to spend 800£ on something I do for fun only but found it refurbished for 650 so I took the plunge and there is no way I am looking back.

The only downside for me so far is the size/weight. I was really used to having a tiny camera in my hands very really light and compact so much so that the D7000 feels like a proper monster. But then the D90 was almost as big :)

But and this is a big one if you don't have a decent collection of lenses buy the D90 and spend the rest to upgrade and or buy better lenses

hmm i have all nikon 50 f.18, the 18-70 zoom and the 70-300 vr2 zoom

Were did you find the refurb one ? Bit wary of the foreign/ebay stuff at this price level
 
Was not on ebay was from a UK seller with an Amazon storefront. There was another one there for 670 from Amazon warehouse just a few days ago but that has also gone.

If you keep an eye and you are not in a rush then you can find some decent bargains.

No bad lenses there really they would complement both cameras just fine so up to you if you wanna spend the extra cash ;)

As I said not sure if the D7000 is worth £400+ extra especially if you do it just for fun but if you find it around the 650£ mark then I think it is a no brainer.
 
What about a used D300 - good step up from the D80, I use the same set of lenses as you and am very happy with the results, and can be had s/h for around £650 :shrug:.

Dont know much about the d300/d300s to be fair . . . though the semi pro controls appeal ... I never use the scenes stuff . I suppose I was thinking of jumping to the newest tech possible.. and the high iso stuff appealed too ?

But I am open to all ideas Nikon !!
