upgrading from canon 300D

Hi,i,m looking to upgrade my camera in the next couple of months from my humble canon 300D. I previously had a nikon D50 which I liked, and a nikon D40 which I didn,t like... the canon 300D is a bit chunky and just about better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.
I don,t intend to try to be a pro or make a living from photography, it,s just as a hobby and I don't want to spend a fortune on lenses.
I like using the older manual lenses with a dslr and can get adapters for nikon or canon makes and use these with either.
probably a mid range dslr from canon or nikon.
which cameras are mid range from these makes or what would a logical upgrade be? and anyone any suggestions?
 
I don't suppose you're open to the suggestion that you should keep the 300D?

Whenever I think about changing my camera I look at the pictures others have taken with the same camera and I realise that I have a long way to go before the camera is the limiting factor.
 
i,ve not really looked to see photos others have taken with it, but I will now. I just don't feel ... confident, somehow... in the images I capture with it. The nikon D40 was the same, where as the D50 seemed.. I don,t know, somehow better..if that makes any sense..lol.
 
I upgraded from the 300D to a 40D and was very pleased with it, but it is a larger body - the 450 / 500D range are a similar size to the 300D if you don't want something bigger :thumbs:

theres a start, I have seen pics in photoplus mag taken with a 300d w/ 'L' glass attatched to it that have seriously blown me away..

but if you have your mind set on a different body and with you liking your manual lenses I would suggest you consider liveview, I am starting to find liveview a godsend when tripod mounted using manual focus.
 
If your finding the 300D a bit "chunky" then i would sugest going to your local camera store and asking to hold all the ones in your price range whether it be new or second hand.

That way you get a feel as to what feels right for you then if you cannot afford a new one at least you know to look for that model but second hand.

If you are wanting to use older manual lenses, don't the D70/D80/D90/DX00 Nikons take the older lenses straight off, rather than the Canon's which need an adaptor? I don't know how the Sonys etc work in this respect.

What current lenses/flashes etc do you have now?
 
Is the 20D and 40D really bigger in size than the 300D? I will have to get into a shop and try some out.
I have a few M42 mount lenses that fit on to the canon with adapter..

yes, bigger and heavier the xxd's are compared to the xxxd's

another thing you can do is use DPReviews buying guide..

remember to click on 'show all cameras, then you can put your current camera side by side with a xxd camera and see the difference in size/weight.

will check out the sony a300, canon 450d and 40d, and the nikon d300.
 
the 300D is the execption to the xxxd small size and is more on a par with the xxD range size wise but with a plastic body.
 
I found the 300D to be a very similar size to the 30D when I upgraded .

The 30D was a very nice step from the 300D, just an all round 'better & faster' camera :thumbs:

PS. all the 300D shots will look the same as the 30D when viewed at small web sizes & none of them will show the difference in AF & buffer speed :)
 
I had a 300D and always regretted selling it. It may not be as responsive as newer cameras and may lack features like live view but if focus speed and buffer aren't really a consideration I believe that the 300D can still be a good camera, capable of excellent results.

I have 300D pictures that are still amongst my favourites, quite a few taken in low light and at hight ISO's too.

I just thought that it might just be a good idea to consider if a body upgrade is really required or not.
 
I had the 300, but when it came to upgrading, the 350, 400 and 450 at the time felt too small.
The 40 came out and I pounced on it, and am glad that I did.
The screen is great, the functionality is more that I need but most of all, it 'feels' that much more complete than the 300.
