Hi all,
I'll try to keep this as succinct as possible. At the moment I have a Canon 500D, 18-55 kit lens, 50 1.8 and Tamron 70-300 SP VC USD.
I have around £1200-1500 to play with over the next few months. Around £600 will be used for a 430 EXII or 580 EX, CF Tripod, Black Rapid Strap, Diffuser and various filters for new lenses. This leaves me with £600-900 to spend on lens(es)
I have done hours of research on the internet in the last few weeks, and have come up some ideas for my gear, but I need all of your help based on experience to help me decide which is best for my uses.
My needs:
Here is how my gear would look to give a better perspective:
Buying the Sigma 10-20 and Sigma 30 1.4:
The idea being I can keep the 10-20 on when exploring towns, cities, and general travelling contextual stuff, can also use the 30 1.4 for portraits indoors/low light photography (and also while travelling). One concern is whether a 30 1.4 could be used as a walkaround lens - is it wide enough? Also is it wide enough for indoor portraits? Would I miss the difference between 20-30mm and 30-50mm?
Buying the Sigma 10-20 and Sigma 17-50 2.8 OS HSM:
Although the 17-50 will be much more versatile for indoor portraits, I will only have the nifty fifty for low light. However, I'll have all focal lengths covered from 10-50mm.
Buying the Canon 17-55 2.8:
Obviously the disadvantages of this are no UWA and no wider low-light lens below 50mm.
Sorry if this has been a bit long-winded, but I'm dying to know what you feel would be best for the requirements I have mentioned. I got a call from a friend tonight to ask if I can photograph a birthday party indoors this Saturday so I would like to get my new equipment then so that I can offer much better quality photos than with my kit lens.
Also, if any of you are strobists is there any reason I should buy the 430 EXII over the 580 EX (Mark I) given I have to choose between these two?
I will greatly (hugely!) appreciate any advice.
Regards
Will.

My needs:
- A lens to replace my 18-55 kit lens but also to use as a walkaround lens so I don't have to change lenses too often (don't mind changing a bit). Ideally this will also be a good portrait lens, including for indoor group portraits (think birthday parties, anniversaries, etc). For this I've rounded down to the Sigma 17-50 OS HSM, Sigma 30 1.4 HSM or Canon 17-55 2.8.
- However, purchasing the latter would mean I am not able to buy an UWA. I'd like to purchase an UWA is because I've heard they are a must for travelling - I'm going to France, Turkey and possibly China this year. In your opinion, is this necessary? Would it be worth going for the 17-55 2.8 or is it better to get the Sigma 17-50 and 10-20?
