Thought it was about time i stopped using OSX86 and went legit :D

Just bought myself a used 3.06ghz 24@ imac. Mint condition, but i wanted more that the standard 500gb hard drive, so a bit of googling later and i took her to bits and put a 1.5tb drive in there, and up the ram while i was at it.

Whole process took less than 30 mins. In fact the hardest part was removing the screen thats held on by magnets.

When you get inside, you can appreciate the design that goes into the iMac, and all the neat little touches.

This is the guide i followed for anyone thats interested

:)

To remove the screen on mine I used the sat nav holder out of car. Attached the plunger and pull it slowly and it came off no problem. Good tip for cleaning out dust in the future.

 didn't think of that, and it was on the desk next to where i was working :bang:

Just bought a Dlink 323 nas to go with it, so got the mammoth task of data transfer now ;)

is it relatively easy for computer illiterate person?

i have the same 24" 3.06ghz and i want to replace it with a 1.5TB and 4gb of ram.

i know the ram upgrade is a doddle but how hard is the HDD to remove?

after reading that guide, i think i'm too chicken to even attempt it!

found somewhere online that does it but they charge loads for the HDD's then there is the courier there and back plus cost of fitting, works out around £200 for a 1.5TB drive.

If it is still in warranty then dont bother with the hard drive, just get a NAS. But the ram is a doddle

how easy is it transferring files, music etc and accessing them in a nas???

would time machine work? saved my life a few times!

Not sure about time machine, but as for transferring file, it just just like a 'local drive' attached to the Mac

might look into it, unless anyone localish would like to try doing the hdd for me once the warranty is out?!

they nas drives look great but are rather expensive :shake:

och, nothing a few hours on the motorway couldnt sort... ha ha.

id just be paranoid doing some irreparable damage

Time machine wont work with a nas im afraid, you would have to go the route of a usb external drive if you want time machine

if you dont mind it being permanently connected to your iMac then USB is cheap nowadays, ebuyer sent an email a few days ago offering 1.5TB for £69

that's a great price! i don't mind, my current external drive is connected but pretty much full atm.

what im ideally looking for is maybe 3tb of storage, with music on the hdd and kept there permanently.

the mark 2 raw files are pretty big and once i get trained il be borrowing the college's hasselblad hd30(?) so i know il need a fair bit of storage.

are these good drives? £70 seems really cheap?!

so a normal hard drive enclosure could fit a couple of these in it then i could transfer everything that way?

ideally i'd want firewire 800, no point in not having it when the mac can do it...

Upgraded another one at weekend with a 2tb drive.

Stat to finish in less than 30 mins (thanks to the tip about the windscreen sucker for removing the screen :D )

If anyone Manchester way wants theirs doing and can get over to me (Stalybridge), drop me a PM (or any further away that are willing to travel :) )

I seen a youtube video where a guy was using a toilet plunger and I thought I must have something better than that to use, needless to say the tomtom screen holder worked a treat!
