Well, maybe.

I've managed to get enough folding together to upgrade from my current 350D to a newer camera. I'm thinking of going to the next level and getting a semi pro cam, and the 2 I have in mind are the 40D or the 50D. Trouble is, I can't decide. I'm thinking the 40D, with a bit of L glass would be a better buy than the 50D with kit lens, as my budget is this side of £1000. I've also heard that there is a feeling that the 40D is actually a better camera than the 50D.:cuckoo: Or, are there any other Canon models that square up in this budget bracket?

Opinions please, bearing in mind that all my lenses are canon fit, so realistically, that puts Nikon or any of the others out of the running.

I will value all your input and opinions, as I want to get this one right.

thanks,

:)Dale.

That sounds like pretty decent logic to me. I upgraded from a 400d to a 40d, I think you'll love the feel of it compared to the 400. ISO performance is much better too, and the FPS can be nice, enjoy whatever you choose!

Given your budget 40D and an L lens.

Which is what I had for a while.

I've been very pleased with my 40D having upgraded from my original 300D - which my daughter is using. Certainly don't think you'd be disappointed and a great lens to go with it

Thanks.

I think the common sense thing to do is a 40D, with nice glass, though to be honest, I may not be able to stretch to L glass as well. Any tips for a sweet lens in the £300 bracket? Something in the region of 20- 105mm would be nice.

It doesn't have to be Canon glass and I'm open to suggestions/advice.

thanks, Dale.

Both will do you fine, but if you can stretch for the 50D go for it. It's worth the extra IMO.

Watch any comparison video on YouTube bud. It convinced me to spend the extra money... Twice.

tamron 17-50 is sharp as a sharp thing on my 50d ;)

not used one, but this lens gets consistently good reviews and sounds like a good choice. If you need something longer in the future the 70-300 IS also seems to have great reviews, or a 70-200 f4L second hand...

Good luck

Thanks all.

I think the 40D is going to be the chosen one, which will leave me some dosh for a half decent lens but I don't think I'll be stretching to L.

I upgraded from a 350D to a 40D
better ISO performance, larger screen, more robust, higher FPS, more options, just a better camera in everyway. (apart from the IR receiver on the front which they remove).

the 50D....well I would say it's a better camera. there was talk at the start but seeing the quality of output on here from the 50D's with L glass... lovely.
is it worth the extra money? my opinion is that if you're looking for better ISO performance at low light then yes...if you're shooting daylight then not as much.
I would be tempted but if it's that and the option of L glass it makes it trickier.
The 40D won't disappoint and the L glass will last for ages.
cheap glass on a 40/50D the tamrons are pretty nice
