Has anyone traded in a camera when upgrading?

If so where did you do it and did you think you got value for money? Looking to upgrade a Canon 1d to a 50d.

Thanks
Chris

It really depends on how much you want the hassle. The trade price the retailer will give you will be a joke. Example: Friends was offered £200 for a 10-22mm lens, currently retailing at £650, used value £400/450, you do the maths, personally although the 2nd hand prices have increased, the price you get hasn't. So me personally, no way, I'd sell it on TP especially if it's fully boxed and has all the bits.

Used 1D is going for £599 on ffordes/mifsuds, 1Ds £699-999, you won't get anywhere close trading it in and a 10-22 going for £499.

2nd hand 50D body @ MPB.... for £650

I agree with Peter

Don't trade-in stuff, sell it on here, etc. you'll get much better ££ for it.
Shops have to (or just do) make serious margin on items traded in. I asked about something in a local shop, and just laughed when the owner gave me a price for an L lens, for which I couldn't of even got a taxi home! (ok, so thats a slight exaggeration - but you get the idea).

Sell it to someone who will pay a fair price, and value it!

Private sale will give a better return.

As a rough guide, for current lenses / bodies, the shops buy in at about 1/3 of the new price, and sell at about 2/3 of the new price. Remember, they have VAT, overheads and warranty to cover, then a profit to make on top, so I don't blame them, it is just the way it is.
