bought a 40d a couple mounths ago with the little money i had, the body was already over my budget so i bought an 18-55mm is lens for £50, id like to replace this in the near future with a non specific lens, pretty all round but not a superzoom.... any help would be apreciated

My upgrade path from a stock lens was a 28-135 IS USM and then on to a 24-70 F2.8L. Lots of very capable lens about however so post up your requirements and a rough budget and I'm sure someone here can make a recomendation. Have to say although the 28-135 was good, it wasnt till I got the L glass did the 40D really shine!

Have you looked at the Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5? I bought the 40D, used it with the 18-55mm IS and immediately upgraded to the Sigma lens. I know this is hardly L series glass, but the difference was noticeable straight away, for not a huge amount of cash.

There is a new IS version (I think Sigma call it OS), worth a look perhaps...

I had a Sigma 17-70 on a 40D once.....brilliant!

I am looking at the Tamron 17-50 2.8 which a lot of people seem to recommend.

There is one for sale on the board at the moment, or you can get a new one from One Stop Digital for £250.
