Upgrading

When upgrading your camera, do people go for " the next one up" or save more and jump ?

I'm pleased with my d3100 but am having thoughts about a few things that aren't included on this entry level DSLR.

I don't have an unlimited budget by the way and am still learning so this is hypothetical at the moment..

I probably had similar frustrations to you with my D5000. I liked the images it could produce but I didn't like the way I had to make almost all adjustments via the menu system. I wanted a Tokina 11-16 but it wouldn't AF on the D5000 and I also wanted 'flash commander'. But mainly it was about the control system.

The logical and sensible upgrade would have been a D90 which would have addressed my issues but I have used one of those a lot as a friend has one. Somehow that made the swap slightly less exciting. In the end I shelled out a bit more and went for a D300. It felt like a huge leap at first but now that I'm a bit more used to it, it feels like it was made for me. Worth a look. They start around £500 used so not daft money.

I've always bought on capability, rather than default to the next model up. I went from D70 to a D700 as I wanted the high iso capabilities. If a lower model had been as good (the D7000 isn't far off but wasn't around at the time), I'd have got one of those, and saved myself a ton of money!

I'd look at the reasons for wanting to upgrade - what are the few things you're thinking of that your body doesn't have and which model does have these.

As said above, generally upgrade to the body you want / need rather than "this one as it's the next one up"

Budget unfortunately also does play a part - I'd love a 1D MKIV, but probably never be able to afford / justify the cost of one

I'd like AEB, more FPS...maybe not to have to go into the menu to change all the settings ( not sure if this is possible ). I have a wired remote but would like IR..

They're obviously the (very ) basics..

Don't know the Nikon range that well, but I would suspect if you look for the model which has the fps you are looking for, it would probably have the other features (and possibly more) you're looking for.

I'm sure those with the detailed knowledge arounf Nikon bodies will be able to suggest certain models, although the D300s springs to mind.

The D90 will nail all this.

I would suggest the D300 but weirdly it doesn't have an IR receiver. You can attach a receiver but once you've done that you might as well just use a wired one. I presume a D300s is the same though somebody might confirm. If you can live without IR, it's a great camera.
