Hi all,

Im travelling in Guatemala, have managed to get some amazing shots of Lake Atilan, went to burn them to DVD using an internet cafe and the CF card has somehow managed to become infected with a Trojan_download win 32 virus and wont display the photos, however, it looks as though the data is still on the CF card as it shows in the properties that the card is 1.4 gb full. This has now happened twice, both times on sandisk extrem III 2 gb cards.

Can anyone advise on what to do and whether the photos are recoverable whilst on the road or lost forever.

Any help would be truly greatly appreciated as some of the photos are the best i have taken.

Much appreciated
Rgds

Not sure how much help this is, but we have a small compact at work, simialr thing happened, there was a virus on the root directory on the SD card, and I couldnt open the image files. However, I could delete the virus just using windows exporer and avast, then open the files ok. If you can, save the card, buy a replacement if necessary and sort it whern you get home, plugging it into another computer might cause more problems. Your camera hasnt given the card a virus, another computer has!

cheers yv, fortunately its only a 2gb, but its strange that its happenned twice to 2 seerate 2gb cards....

Any other ideas......would be nice to have some comfort that the photos are recoverable, even if it is when i return home in 12 months

There's a good chance they are recoverable in my experience, not always, but generally, you're in with a fair chance of getting most or all of them back, if done correctly. If you don't have access to any reliable recovery software while you're traveling you could:

a. Pack them away safely 'till you get home, and get them professionally recovered when you return. (My choice, if the images are important.)

b. Try to recover the data yourself, using free online software...(not advisable unless you really know what you're doing and have some time!)

c. Post them back home, (possibly risky?) and get a friend in the know, or a pro place to recover the images.

I would by more CF cards (if available,) avoid internet cafes if possible, and enjoy the rest of the trip! Best of luck!

I'm not sure how good other software is but I have a commercial data recovery package on the mac which bypasses the filing system are just searches for images on the drive or memory card. If the images are still there it will recover them. PM me if you want me to read them off and stick them on a DVD for you.

In light of the above post, I would ignore my previous a, b and c choices, and take the "cowasaki" option! ;) He really knows his stuff, and has kindly offered to help fellow TP members in this situation many times!

Have a look at the Panda Antivirus web site, I believe they have a couple of plug ins that are designed to protect the PC from transfer of files when a USB device is plugged in, you should be able to then scan the card and disinfect it. Watch out for the DVD too, you may heve burnt the trojan onto there too

Thanks for all th responses guys. Have contacted cowasaki too, nice offer and greatly appreciated.

Managed to find a dude with some savvy who runs a net cafe and he has recovered all the shots. Panick over.....although i am now ver dubious about using thes places. Looks like i may be laying out for a laptop in san salvador...

onc e again, thanks for all the advice. Great forum !!!

If i can i will pot a few of the shots for c& c soon...

Regards
Greg
