urgent help please

Just turned on my laptop and got a message saying that another computer is logged on with the same IP address.

This is the only laptop in the house

Probably best to shut down the laptop and reboot your router (ADSL or cable) - make sure you have no other IP connected items (iPhone/media streamer/etc.)

as above. unplug the router from the mains and plug it back. you'll get new IP and everything should be ok

Thanks for the quick replies, I'm shutting it down now, well once it's finished the virus scan. Wonder if it's my blackberry clashing or something then. Had a panic thinking someone had hacked in

wouldnt necessarily worry too much, some routers are just carp at managing IP address issuing.

Have turned it all off and on again and seems to be ok now. Never seen it before so just had one of those panics

I used to get this all the time, my iPhone would steal my laptops IP address.
Some bloke who thinks he is gods gift to everything told me this was impossible and I was being stupid. I sent him a screenshot of the router admin page, showing both devices listed with the same IP to shut him up. He never replied after that oddly.

To solve it, I changed the lease time to 30 years, so all devices will keep the IP they are assigned. Alternatively you can turn of DCHP and set the IP's to static manually.

or just go to start > run > cmd

type ipconfig /release <enter>
type ipconfig /flushdns <enter>
type ipconfig /renew <enter>

Most decent routers let you reserve a particular IP for a particular device. I do that with all mine so they don't wander about or clash. You can add mac address security so only devices with known macs can get an IP in the first place. It's a good way of locking down your connection but is inconvenient when you get a new device as you have to fiddle about finding the device mac address and adding it.

I used to get it all the time with my old router. It did have it's benefits though as I knew when my lad was sneaking on to the network
