Hi

I am off to the bike show tomorrow at the NEC and I need some quick help regarding settings. Dont I need to the white balance?

Thanks
Matt

(P.S If you go, go to hall 2, stnad 10 and see mine and Ian Smarts pictures up in lights :D)

lol matt

if i was you shoot in raw or try something like 3200k

in the kelvin settings

those lights in there can be fun....

enjoy it mate..

can you shoot in RAW and Jpeg? takes up more space but worth it IMO

you can open RAW's in PS and adjust them to suite, far more options available than a Jpeg

Shoot RAW +jpeg, if those Canon things give you the option :naughty:

it's about time you learnt to use RAW anyway, young man!

As ..MD.. says, the lighting at the NEC is pretty awful, the only thing you can do is try a few test shots with the various WB settings until you get one that looks right and then use that, or set a custom white balance.

It would be much easier if you shot in RAW though, then you could adjust the colour temp of your pics when you got home...

what lenses do you want to take mate.

raw loads of programs you can use to convert after.. in all honesty mate once you shoot raw and learn how to convert that will be it for jpeg

i use raw shooter essentials free

So pure RAW or Raw and Jpeg?

50mm, sigma 18-50 3.5-5.6, sigma 70-300 5.6.

WIll my Jpegs that are on the camera already be affected or wiilll I need to download them>

Matt, I've recently made the switch from jpeg to RAW, and I'll never go back. It gives you so many options that are simply not available with a jpeg. Shooting somewhere like the NEC, I'd have thought the ability to alter the white balance in post processing would be invaluable, so I'd go RAW all the way. What software have you got?

RAW and Jpeg IMO

if you then get decent shots from the Jpegs just download as normal, if you dont you have the backup of the RAW to you can alter light, exposure and so on

Right ok, I will just go with both, seems the better option lol.

You do have apoint, will go with that!

Fair point, I think I will go with both!!

raw

raw

RAW

come on matt come over to the dark side :naughty:

md:lol:

The Canon software is actually a pretty decent RAW processing package, you'll be fine with that. Takes a little while to get your head around, just because there are so many more things you can do with the image. RAW+jpg would be the way to go if you've got the card space.

I wasnt bothered, it was just a shock!! Probs only take 400 anyway

So the 50mm, Jpeg and RAW, 3200 WB. SORTED :D

Off to bed I go :D

Thanks guts, anytihng else, I will read in the morning!!

Christ picture space from 2000 odd to 400 odd

That's uncompressed data for you. It wouldn't be fair to all the scantily clad ladies you're going to see draped over expensive bikes tomorrow to compress them down into a jpeg would it?

They've got this amazing thing on cameras now, called a display :p What you do is take a photo and if it doesn't look right then you change the settings.

50mm might be a bit too narrow angle, i've never shot bikes before but i know that crowds at shows can be quite ignorant to people trying to take photos and if you stand too far back you'll get a lot of people wandering in front of you.

Raw gets my vote Matt

Enjoy the show! I'm looking forward to seeing the results :)

Why shoot in RAW and jpeg? Why not just RAW?

Well I'll be taking the 1D, 24-70 and 580EX. For some reason people get out of the way and the ladies pose more enthusiastically when you start waving this in their direction. Shoot raw Matt, the lighting can change that much from one stand to the next it is good to have some additional leeway later.

And don't be afraid to ask them to pose, most of them are quite happy to oblige. At past shows it has not been unknown for me to end up with a crowd of point and shoot guys waiting for me to finish getting my shot and then they all jump in to get their mates to take their photo with the girls.

as an added insentive to come across to the raw dark side, i,m sure one of here would tweek a picture and send you back a curve or settings to use. All for free.

by next week you will wonder why you asked:bang:

FANTASTIC. I loved every single minute.

I saw Steve Parish and I met Jamie Whitham, Niall Mcenzie, John Renoylds, Leon Camier and Suzukis new rider :)

Oh and Charly Boorman
Also won a Barry Sheene DVD for asking a good question at the Forum
