Hi Guys,
just wondered what others are using.
I'm looking to get a 5M usb extension lead for tethered photos with the lap-top.
Some I've seen are called "active" extension leads (Maplins is an example). Aparently active extensions boost the signal.

The question is - does anyone else use active extension leads at 5M long or will an ordinary £3 non-active of e-bay do the same job.

Camera is a D70 and vista lap-top. The camera lead that the extension would be fastened to is usbA to mini usbB (if that's what it's called) and about 18" long.

Thanks in advance for any responses

I've successfully shot tethered with my 5D using a 5m USB 2.0 lead from Maplins. My lead is an A (Male) to mini 5pin (Male) manufactured in China by Nikkai and labeled 'Pure Connectivity'. No where does it say anything about it being active.

active? wtf?

i smell a gimmic. never once have i had any issues with speed drop across long USB leads. just try not to run them near power cables like any other data cables and im sure youll be fine.

Not a gimmic at all. They have USB powered repeaters built in...I've got three of them and can run safely into the garden for remote shooting.

Decided to order the standard 5m cable - will let you know how it works when it arrives.

Hurry up postie please . .

I have 2 5m USB extension cables.

The standard one is connect to a printer, so if I have a data transfer problem no big deal ( Has worked fine for about a year by the way) The active one like Canon Bob I use for tethered shooting. I don't want data corruption with the images coming from the camera. OK so the active ones are a bit more expensive, but the extra is worth it for peace of mind.

Well cable arrived in good time.
Connected up and seems to work fine with the few test shots I've done as a trial - looking good.

Would have gone for the "active" cable, but it looks quite bulky the "active" part of the cable.

Anyway fingers crossed the cable I have will continue working fine.

Thanks

Are active USB leads the ones with the small cylinder attached close to one end?

Regards, James

The ones I've seen when trolling t'internet have a larger molding around the female socket of the cable - looked quite bulky to me.

Check out some sites - ebuyer, novatech, dabs etc you should find some pictures there.

No. These cylinders can be found on a large number of cables and are filters designed to remove high-frequency interference. They are nothing more than a ferrite supressor that is wrapped around the outside of the cable.
