Yes
Ive just brought a 500gb Samsung USB HDD. I started my little back up program and it failed to complete the back up, three times this happend.

So, I then decided to format the drive and start again. But I cant complete the format process. I have tried on two PC's now and both Quick format and normal formatting processes, and neither will complete the format.

Any ideas what's going on?

No.

Bit worrying as I was thinking of buying 2 of those as travel storage. If you go into disk management via control panel can you delete and remake the primary partition and then format from scratch? If it is just bought I'd be more inclined to send it back for replacement.

Only other thought is being powered by usb it might need more power than the port is supplying - especially if it is a laptop. Try a socket straight off the motherboard on a desktop PC ?

Im on Vista at the moment and the chkdsk just produces a black flash of a screen then it disappears...........! I can try that on XP on my laptop if that helps????

Even in disk management it doesnt seem to want to allow me to do anything..........

I brought it from ebuyer. think they'll take it back even though I have tried to format?

diagnostics

basically something is stopping chkdsk by restricting acess to the drive, do a fresh reboot and try again. otherwise try disabling your virus checker and/or spyware app and trying again.
