My main pc has 6 usb ports and now two of the 6 do not work and one is on its way out. Any ideas why ? could it be a software problem or is it over use taking usb leads/dongles in and out a lot?

It's quite a common problem - My old PC had 5 USB posts and only one of them worked so just had to use a USB hub connected.

I don't *think* it will cause many more problems apart from being a nuisance if you need to use more than 4 ports.

Can you have all 4 ports plugged in and useable at the same time?

The 2 that are not working.

Are they at the back as a direct part of the motherboard, or, are they front/top extra ports, connecting to the board via cables?

These may be loose.

Have you tried deleting the USB ports in the Device manager and rebooting upon which windows will re-install the drivers?

Re daisy chains, there are some devices that prefer to be plugged into the motherboard directly. Manual usually states this.

Just be aware though that if the devices are powered by the PC via the usb ports you might be running the risk of overloading the USB system. I would suggest that if you're going to use multiple USB devices at the same time you should invest in a powered USB hub to ensure the stability of the device's operation.

I used to have some terribly random issues with a USB powered scanner and a poorly powered USB port. :bang:

Yes, that issue is worth bearing mind.
Where poss. I opt to go for USB ancillary equipment that has it's own power supply.

Oh b****r baz r they no good

Well the one I got wasn't! It lasted about 3 weeks, seller didnt want to know! I had already left feedback so just binned it! The Bellkin is a much better bit of kit, even has a detachable bit that serves as a portable hub!
Give your new one a try mate, you never know, it might be OK!

Julian,

I'll have a look at 'em for you and bring some replacement USB port back plates in case it is the ports that are physically worn out.

Probably but I have lots of the USB back plates etc so it is absolutely no hassle anyway!

I haven't ordered the power supply, I gave you the link and thought you would pass the link to her or order it. I didn't realise you wanted me to order it. The laptop is fully working and ready to hand back to her with the power supply.

Oh right soz mate will send her that today I got it wrong she paid me for it to give you, but will sort it today

Never one to go for half measures, I bought one of these. It's a powered 7-port USB hub with 3 mains sockets as well. A very nice, all-in-one solution.

This.

My main computer at the moment is - don't laugh - a netbook, with a monitor, keyboard and mouse attached. It only has two USB ports but I have (I think) about 6 or 7 things plugged in. Getting them all to work is... challenging, as none of the hubs are powered :cuckoo:
