Used Canon 40D opinions

I have the opportunity to purchase a Canon 40D with an 18-55mm IS lens, manual, battery charger, case and cables for £200.

Upon speaking to the seller, she is selling it for her son who has upgraded to a 5D and moved abroad.

As such, she is unsure of shutter count but states the camera is in very good nick - the son has just completed a photography diploma - but she did say that the price reflects the use it's had.

I figure with the extras, the body only is working out at about £150ish

I'm going to see it on Saturday, so my, possibly unanswerable, question is - how used can I expect it to be? And does it sound like it's worth a punt? How much is shutter replacement, should it come to that?

Can she not get the shutter count for you, or can you take a laptop and find out when you go to look.

If the shutter count is not silly then that's a good price.

That's what's worrying me a bit!

Story was that her son was due to take it abroad but was given the 5D as a leaving present. As such, I took that to mean that it was fine as I don't imagine he would have taken it otherwise.

What would be deemed a silly shutter count given a shutter life expectancy of 100,000(?)

Also, any idea how I would get a shutter count? - I'm on a Mac. My E520 has an in-body way of finding out.

Shame its not a few months later i will be selling mine, with low shutter count and a sigma 17-70 lens.

Just checked mine using EOSInfo for Windows, but on a Mac you can use 40D Shutter Count.

Prepping mine to sell and it reported a shutter count of 32k which seems pretty reasonable?
 
If you can't get an accurate shutter count then just take a careful look at the overall condition of the camera. Any camera that's been used enough to get the shutter over say 50k is going to show signs of wear on the rubber. If it looks in very good condition then the chances are it'll have been lightly used and have a low shutter count.

Thanks for this. I shall take my Macbook with me, and see if I can get a count. If not, I'll go by body wear and tear.

If I can get a count; as a guide, would folk reckon that <60,000 would be ok for the price?

I'd say yes that would be more than a fair price. Over 60k and you'll have to think that it's already past the halfway point in it's life.

To put things in perspective my £280 40d had less than 5000 on the clock, so if you're after low mileage then you'll pay more, but if this has under 60k I'd say its a fair deal
 
friend was just offered £180 for his 40D and £35 18-35is, was in good condition.i bought it off him instead :)

they are about 265 body only on mpb - so you've got a bargain there.

(I paid 300 body only earlier in the year from another member here , although that was with a grip, 4 batteries, 4 4Gb cards, and a bag so its still relatively comparable)
 
Many thanks to everyone. Went to see it today, very good condition, everything working and only 34,000 on the clock - over the moon, so bought it on the spot!

Looks like you've got a very good price then, enjoy it, I really like mine :thumbs:
