Hi all,

I'm looking to take some general shots and want a bit more range than my 28-105.

I have seen a used sigma 70-300 D 1:4-5.6 in my local camera shop for £79.

I have tried it on my D50 and it works fine.
I have been advised that it's not great for low light though so I assume that means its an outside only lens...

So the question I have please, is for general photography is this worth buying or would I see a significant difference from something like a Tamron 70-300 4-5.6 DI LD for £169 ?

Thanks for you time. :)

If you go for the sigma, then go for the APO version of the 70-300.....its much better than the non-APO. Sorry, but can't comment on the tamron version...

Thanks.
With the APO version being more than double the price (new), will I really see a big difference for general photography? I'm not going to be selling the photos or anything like that...

The Sigma DG Macro is broadly comparable with the cheaper Tamron covering the same length. The APO version of the Sigma is better than both.

I found the DG Macro to be slow to focus (fine for most things except sports), but soft at the long end.

Get the APO - the non APO version would only make you want the better one, I used the APO version (canon) a while back and it was good, a very useful focal range and when stopped down to around F8 it was actually really sharp.

The focus is really loud and slow, though.

Thanks everyone. I went back in and took a few shots with it. I mentioned the APO version but they didnt have any so I decided to buy it and see how I get on. :)
As I say, my requirements are general and my abilities basic at this point. :)
