Hello,

Just wondering if a 77mm CPL filter on my 58mm lens (with a step up ring), would affect image quality?

Is using a 77mm filter on a 58mm lens too much of a jump?

Its the cheaper alternative to buying multiple filters:)

Thanks in advance,

Mike

Using a larger diameter filter on a smaller diameter lens will have no effect on image quality. The quality of that filter however may have an impact on image quality.

Not sure what you mean about it affecting image quality, a filter is a filter !!!
I have used a Lee 105mm Pol. filter on lens ranging from 49mm thread to
95mm with the correct adapters. No problems.

I agree with Tom and CeeJay in principle but with a slight caution.
The inability to fit a lens hood may on occasions lead to flare.

I just thought using a wider diameter filter on a smaller diameter lens might have some problems that go with it, as its not the 'correct' fit.

Im thinking of buying the Hoya 77mm Pro 1D Circular Polarizing filter and using an inexpensive (£2.99) step up ring (metal) purchased from ebay:)

That's what i do, I've never had an issue. I bought an expensive filter, so didn't want to have to buy another if i upgraded in the future

Yes that would work OK.
Re: Canon Bob's comment you could always buy a 77mm hood, type would depend on W/A or standard type lens you are using.I use a Lee hood again depending on lens in use ( I have both types, but they are a bit expensive !)
