Using a camera strap with a heavy lens

I spent some time at the Mach Loop last year with a 300mm f4 lens on the the body but using the standard camera strap. I went to use it once and the camera reported that the leans wasn't attached which I'm guessing is down to the weight of the lens because undoing it and clipping it back on sorted it.

Looking online, there are a few sling straps like the Black Rapid and Joby Ultra sling but they are shown with the tripod connector in the base of the camera body. Does anyone use these type of strap with the tripod connector threaded into the lens foot or is there a better way?

Black Rapid user with my 100-400 zoom works well and way more comfortable than standard straps.
 
I use a Black Rapid with my 7D and 300mm f/4 connected to the tripod ring. Very comfortable and hangs well when walking around.

....Me too when I had a Canon 300mm F/4 L (now sold) on my 7D Mark II.

Ah! I forgot to say I have an AS plate as per the way Robin has but my clamp is a Wimberly C-12 (thinks is that code right)
 
then you can get "togged up" like a togger

the 300mm f4 ain't heavy

You guys should really look into b-grip evo. You will forget straps. I can't stand straps anymore. Another one to look out for is Capture by Peak Design however it may not be suitable for a camera and a 300mm lens.
 
Oh yes, add a hand grip to your b-grip evo and bobs your father's brother.
 
A quick question about the b grip and capture type systems. How well do these work with large/heavy lenses?
All the pictures I've seen show the plate on the body and clipped in, however I have always preferred to mount the strap onto the tripod collar, therefore reducing the strain on the mount, after all when attached to the 120-300, it would have 3kg unsupported whereas mounting the lens to the strap would leave 1kg unsupported. Just wondered what everyone's experience is.
 
Ok you got me there. I don't think these systems will work in that scenario. These clips attach to the body only, however they are a joy to use. Having said that I will try mounting the clip on the lens and rest it out.
 
Op-Tech have a nice system using their Lens Loop (see link below), this is what i use, and i use it along side the usual Op-Tech mounting position too so that when i have a long lens attached it's attached to my strap in 2 places (added security/safety) and it hangs nicely in the downward position too which i find more comfortable
