Hi all, Im going to ask my stupid question of the day!:(

Can I use a battery grip functions (Nikon D7000) without a battery in the grip? Or does it need one in the camera and one in the grip?

There, i've said it - let the ridicule begin :D

I dont know how it is on nikons , but on canon you have to have a battery in the grip because the grip inserts itself into the battery bay on the camera so theres nowhere else to put one.

I think you can get away with one battery in the grip , but in all honesty why would anyone only put one in if theres room for too
 
Didn't know you could fit a brip with a battery in the battery compartment. I take it that it's not the same as Canon where the grip goes into the battery compartment. ?
 
AH... on my D5000, the grip slots into the battery compartment of the camera so yup needs batteries in the grip... on the D7000, the grip uses contacts on the bottom of the camera so one battery in camera and one in grip ;)

As for not using 2 if there is room - the life on a D7000 battery is forever and a bit longer, but in reality, the grip is cheap, the battery is mega buckaroos :D so thinking about getting the grip and adding a battery later if it can be used without one.
 
7 day shop for batteries - on my canon the canon battery is about 50 notes, generics from jessops are 25.99, and 7 day shop are 5.99 - and the 7 day shop ones out perform the jessops ones and are at least equall to the canon ones in charge retention etc
 
you can have the battery in the carmera or the grip or 1 in both, or 1 battery in the camera and aa's in the grip, i just have the 1 battery so mine goes in the grip, saves taking the grip of everytime you need to charge the battery

Thanks to the other guys for trying the grips with one battery :thumbs:

Now for a search for a cheap nikon fit battery :'(
 
thanks Danny, thats the grip im looking at, but reluctant to spend that much on a battery where I can't belittle the sales guy if it goes pear shaped :D
 
Don't forget you can use AA batteries in that grip so no real reason to get a second battery, i always carry plenty of rechargable aa's with me, mainly for the flash but will work in the grip, only takes 6

Grip arrived today, very pleased with the functions, does what it says on the tin :D

Only initial gripe is the thumb wheel lock feels a bit flimsy :suspect:
For anyone else thinking of getting one, it works with a battery in the grip :thumbs:

Overall, chuffed to bits and should now feel better shooting without bending my arm all day ;)
 
I now only use one battery in the grip rather than two, as it gives me a better idea of when my batteries are going to run out. I'd rather have them run out one at a time, rather than two go flat at the same time.

Haven't been so keen on using AA batteries, for some reason I've had problems with them supplying enough power when I had the Canon 100-400mm lens attached and my camera wouldn't stay powered on after a few minutes (happened with brand new Energizer batteries). But they work ok if I use a smaller lens, so I still use AAs now and again.

Was it the third party one you went for? I use a Meike grip on my D300s and I'm very pleased with it! The AA tray is very handy also for extra power when it's needed - unless you drop it and break it like I did with mine :lol:
 
I ended up going for a cheap £30 grip (included 2 batteries as well)for my 550d off Amazon. Feels nice to hold but the shutter button was horrible, felt really spongy and was difficult to half press without releasing the shutter or losing the focus lock entirely.

The other problem was the bottom had a very smooth finish near where you would attach the tripod. My camera was nowhere near "locked-down" on the tripod and would spin to the side even with the slightest pressure on the camera.

Ended up tossing it in the bin but the 2 batteries are actually very good so not all bad :)

OOOHHHHH Yes, third party Meike grip, jeepers have you seen the price of genuine ones :gag: Got plenty of 2700 AA batteries so I'll drop them in and see how long they last, I feel happier now as I shoot 90% portrait orientatian :naughty:
 
I am using enloops in my d7000 grip and so far they are doing well.

My thinking was £21 for 12 enloops compared to £50 for Nikon en-el15
 
Hmmm, a new word for my dictionary...... Enloops??? Im thinking they are a brand of batteries :shrug:
 
Well the AA batteries don't last long..... About 150 shots. Back on to full charge and try again.
 
I just bought a cheapo grip for mine too. I'm not bothered about functions as I only use it for balancing the camera with big lenses.
 
AA's are just for back up 150 shots should see you through a photoshoot with a fully charge normal battery used first, that would be thousands of pics lol
 
also if u r like me as said, i use my camera in verticle 95% of the time and you find the thumb wheel aanoying as they turn the wrong way, you can change that in the camera menu, it will change the camera dials but i find it to be much better

Enloops are Sanyo enloop aa batteries.

As for them in a grip, I am almost at 500 shots on one charge and still showing full.

It's 'Eneloop', not 'Enloop'. Might make them a bit easier to find. ;)

never used aa's in mine, i dont take enough photos between chargers to warrent it tbh, i can get hundreds upon hundreds of shots on a single charge

The AA's would be for backup in desperation so worth having the tray just in case. No-one seems to have produced a copy of the battery yet so I'll get a couple when the do.

The battery does last a long time tbh but always better to have a spare ;)

Much prefer the buttons on the grip too, I use back button focus and it's so much easier with the grip :)
 
I'm now at about 450 shots including 10 minutes video using Duracell AA in my official D7000 grip. Made of the same alloys and wheels turning proper direction :)
