Using a Zoom Lens on the beach.

Hi

Are there chances of sand getting into the lens or camera sensor when using a Zoom Lens on the beach.

I will not be changing the lens but just using a 55-200 Nikon, or should I just stick to my 35mm. I will be taking pics of my kids.

Yes, absolutely there is a chance of sand, not necessarily getting IN your lens, but getting in/under the zoom ring or barrel.
You could minimise the risk by covering it, or putting your combo in a large plastic bag, with a hole cut out for the lens & putting an elastic-band round the end. Using a UV/plain filter on the front will also protect the front element.

Thank you for the pointer. I have a protector on the lens so that is covered. Will take some rubber bands and food bags..Just don't want to get any dust on the sensor.

Surely if you don't change the lens there's no risk of getting dust on the sensor :shrug:

That is what I am thinking but not 100% sure if the zoom would suck in the sand when the barrel moves which may end up on the sensor.
 
Dont worry about it, as long as you treat it well it will be fine. Every time you take it out dust could get in!! I would say with sand being larger and heavier it will be haarder to suck up. Just keep in bag when not using, dont place camera on sand, and have clean hands!
