Using adaptor plates

I have a D40 with the 2 kit lenses, but I also have a lovely old Fujica lens (M42 mount, from my ST605 Film SLR) and I'd like to use it on the D40. I've read some issues before about using the adaptors to go from one mount to another. I'm not bothered about AF. The Fujica lens is a 55mm 1:2.2 prime, and really is lovely so before I spend out on a nifty I thought I might give it a go. Will I have any problems using an M42 to Nikon mount apator?

I'm not sure if it'll focus to infinity, some combinations of lens/bodies have the wrong spacing for want of a better word, it depends on the distance between the focal planes of the two bodies.

I've found a Kood one on Speed Graphic that says it will focus to infinity, but I'm still not sure. I'm worried about IQ as well.

I don't think you'll get any metering on the D40 with an F to M42 adaptor.

As far as I know you cannot mount M42 lenses on the Nikon F mount and retain infinity focus, UNLESS there's an optical element in the adaptor.

If there's no optical element, then IQ will not be affected. If there is an element, IQ will be affected, but it may be negligible.

As the flange back distance is longer on the M42 mount than the F mount, you're essentially using the lens with an extension ring, hence the shorter maximum focus distance.

Edit: In a magnified view of that Kood adaptor, you can see the lens element in the adaptor.

Cheersp Blap, that's what I thought when I looked. Roll on payday :D
