Using labeled music?

Hi, I'm currently in the planning stages of planning a Mountain Bike video I'm going to film. It won't be for profit, just a web video. I have been contacting artists and sometimes labels to ask for permission (drum and bass stuff mostly) and the majority of people resond back to me and say yes.

However, do I need to do this? I've been told so long I don't use all of the song and leave links on where to find the music to buy I can use any song? Is this true or?

Don't really want my videos music to be taken off youtube, while it would also be nice to stay legit.

Different music will have different licences attached to it. Just like photos.

Best to either approach them directly as you have been doing, or to go through one of the licencing bodies, depending on the music you wish to use.

Jayst84 is right - you need permission to use copyrighted material. A good source of information is the PRS: http://www.prsformusic.com/Pages/default.aspx
