Hi all. I have a 17-85mm lens ( as the title says .. ) and im going to use it tomorrow for5 a wedding shoot... thing is on a previous post i made, someone told me that it will get allot of barrel distortion. So any way, i went to my front door there and took a couple of pics of a lamppost which is about 30 meters away and it dosnt look lik it is leaning over although there is a little distortion. What im asking is, should i use the lens or should i stick to my 18-55 lens for the most part?

Any advice would be good. Also i was thinking about selling my 10-20 sigma and getting a new lens specifically for weddings.. any recommendations? I am looking for an L series lens - someone said to get a 70-200 but isnt that a bit long? When i was using my 18-55 lens at the last wedding i was enjoying getting in close to the people ... surly the 70-200 will be too close for comfort?

ill find out tomorrow i suppose ;)

btw i have a 50mm prime 1.8 and im thinking i need a 17-50mm f2.8 to go along with it but i dont want a tamron becasue according to what i have read about them they are pretty crappy.

It would seem according to what people are saying that it is like being a super model with size 0 - if i can get a lens that is size zero (f/0) then im laughing (this will obviously never happen) .. is this just obsession or is it a valid point? Am I a great photographer simply because i have a supper fstoppped to the max lens? what about composition? and what about the people in the photo?

Some one said to me in my last post which i totally agree with that you can have the best gear in the world but you still need to know how to take the photo.

Lens advice please!! :bonk::bonk::bonk::bonk::bang::bang::bang:

btw i can probably muster up about £500 for a lens (this will include selling my 10-20 and some kelly from my paypal account)

Maybe a bit late in the day to start switching kit?

Why not stick to what you know......

BTW you can correct for barrel distortion in DPP, presume you're shooting RAW if you're a wedding tog?

As for lenses, well I see many people praising the 17-55f2.8

I was going to say that the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 is probably one of the best Tammys out there. I think that it is a really good and sharp lens. You can also get a Sigma 17-50 f/2.8, but I heard that the Tamron was better. And I don't think that the distortions will cause any problem on your 17-85, and if so they will be tiny and as Steve said - easily corrected if shot in RAW.

Best of luck at the wedding!

Yea I think the delivery on a new lens wont be less than 24 hours .. especially not from england. Any ways, think ill read all the reviews I can about the 17-55f2.8 lens and I recon this is going to be the next one i buy. Ebay seems to have a couple on just now so ill keep an eye on them.

if your planning on doing weddings and getting paid for it the minimum i would have would be what i now have:
5D (or other main body)
40D (or other back up body)
24-70 2.8 (or fast short prime)
70-200 2.8 (or long fast prime)
50 1.8
flash gun
more memory cards than nasa
the knowledge to deal with any situation, and know your gear.

From reading your post it looks like you havent thought about how dark it is inside a church(if the wedding is in one) you will need a fast lens or a camera that can handle high ISO (well both really)

but good luck tomorrow, i hope it goes well for you and the G&G

cool cheers. I shoot raw all the time .. i just think it makes life easier - in fact i use manual settings all the time too.. never got too used to using the auto settings on my camera and i think it has made me better at what i do also makes me think more about every shot i take.

I saw a tamron lens in currys the other day for £109. I picked it up and stuck it too a canon camera they had on the shelf and both together felt really light .. the lens felt like a toy in my hand. My camera, lens and battery grip together are a heavy piece of kit and that what i like because they feel substantial in my hand and it helps keep them stable.

Am i going off topic?

Ive phoned the camera shop in perth but they dont seem to have much lenses nowadays. I got my 10-20 there. I would prefer to try the lens out before buying but thats obviously not possible with ebay or mail order in general so ill have to keep reading reviews and getting advice on what to buy and why.

frustration rips through me when picking lenses

Well I purchased a Sigma 17-50 f2.8 from here and just used it at a wedding venue that only allows 3 flash photo's within the building due to paintings on the walls etc.
And I have to say it was money well spent!! :)
I have the older non macro version and the only slight issue I got was slight Chromatic Aberration on a few pics.
Great lens..

thanks for the advice. I would like all of the above except the 5D (id prefer a 7d tbh). I have already scoped the location and it is inside a conference hall which is well lit (ive been there with the couple and i have also had a couple of meetings with the bride to be and her parents - ive been running my own businesses for years and i know you need to be informed before doing anything with the public so i do come prepared).

I have not yet took a booking in a church - most young people seem to be more interested in the full onsite package as far as i can tell... Infact while i was having my tea there a couple from perth phoned and booked me for there wedding in September and it also is in a hotel - so another wedding with no church.

So for tomorrow what i will have with me is:

40d
20d (backup)
18-55 3.5
nifty fifty 1.8
17-85 f4
lens/bumbag for carrying 2 lenses just in case i want to change
2x 8 gig cards
lots of batteries (canon ones)
EX 430 speedlite (with white diffuser)
and some nice clothes on.

I had all of this last time and i used

40d
18-35

nice clothes
