Using Step-up rings - any disadvantages?

I'm just wondering whether using step up rings will cause extra vignetting/light fall-off.

My largest thread-size at the moment is 77mm and I now have a 72mm lens and don't want to have to purchase a CPL and UV for that lens as well when I have perfectly good filters already.

Are there any other cons to using step up rings rather than buying the right sized filters???

I doubt it'll be a problem, unless it's a really thick step up ring and / or a very wide lens. But... your original lens cap probably wont fit.

...or more of a problem your lens hood, but should otherwise be fine as long as you don't try mixing/ stacking 72 and 77 mm filters.

Oh good point I hadn't thought of that. This could be very annoying if I find that I can't fit my hood on....
