Using the 1.4x extender with 24-105???

Hi All

Has anyone successfully used the 24-105mm with the 1.4x extender on a 40D?

Just thinking ahead to use at venue(s) where they restrict your access to a lens max 30cm long.................I think my 100-400mm might intimidate the "security checker" who knows diddly squat about photography but associates Canon white lens with the pro's at such events!

So just looking for a solution that would looks less "pro big lens" but still provide a tad extra reach???

Your maximum reach would be around 265mm and you'd lose a couple of stops of light adding the TC. Might be worth considering a smallish zoom lens like the 55-250 if you've got a crop camera or the 70-300 - both are a fair bit smaller than the 24-105 & don't cost a fortune. Neither are as good as your lens under normal circumstances but may be better in these situations

I've tried it but only in the back garden it's normally on my 70-200 f4 is works exactly the same. Only thing with the extender is you do noticeably loose detail at a 1:1 crop but this is pretty normal and if your looking at 1:1 you need to get out more

Not sure about your calculations but the 1.4x on the 24-105 would give me max 147mm as straight mag but if you are talking the 1.6 crop that lifts it to effective 'reach' of 235mm. And the 1.4x extender will lose 1 stop i.e. the f4 becomes f5.6 and that means AF will still work on the 40D (or should!)

I do have the 70-300 but this was relegated to the cupboard when I got the 100-400, though a good lens that served me well it is a tad soft between 260-300.

Thanks for the user insight. My 24-105 is one razor sharp lens not unlike the 70-200 you mention....................I am now wondering about sensor resolving power and whether I should seriously consider getting the 7D and that when used with the lens & 1.4x extender may be will have the potential to yield usable crops???


Oh well a few weeks to think on it and decide on what may be best to do/try???

For the benefit of anybody reading this... My staff and I discussed this with Laurence ("BoxBrownie") off line. The bottom line is, if you're looking at a Canon Extender then all the calculations are irrelevant because it won't physically fit on a 24-105. Canon Extenders have protruding front elements, so they only fit lenses which have recessed rear elements. Canon lenses only have recessed rear elements if they are designed to accommodate Extenders, which the 24-105 isn't. Maybe you could get a third party teleconverter to work, but I have no knowledge in that arena.

Third party TC will mount nearly anything with EF mount. However, at 105mm the lens is not at it's sharpest already, and adding TC will make the matter far worse.
Canon 135mm f/2 is a brilliant small low light lens for those conditions.

You are 100% correct I am one of those Internet people that tells someone something and is talking BS. I'm sure I tried it honest. I will message the OP.
