how do you get two seperate readings one of the sky & one of the ground so that you can blend the two together
 
Meter for the sky.

Then meter for the ground.

Point your camera into the air (the sky in your scene), note the readings, then point it at

the ground (in your scene) and note the readings.
 
You don't. If you intend to blend then you'll need to bracket exposures. Either expose for the darker area and then do a few shots with incremental under exposure to recover the brighter area or expose for the brighter area and do a few shots with incremental over exposure to recover the darker area.

Whatever you do... if it's a landscape, alter the shutter speed... not the aperture, as differences in depth of field will be apparent when you try and merge them.
