Using the Redsnapper tripod mount for Black rapid style setup

As the title says really. I have got various straps and webbing from other bag setups and was wondering whether my Redsnapper tripod plate would be upto the job of clipping it all onto.

The red snapper plate has a loop in the bottom, just like the FastenR3, and was wondering if i could save myself £13 and just use my tripod plate?

Thoughts...?

I think the problem is that the loop on the redsnapper plate is actually used to tighten the screw that holds it to the camera. If you clipped stuff to that you might run the risk of it undoing and the camera dropping off of the strap...

Does the black rapid one have a spinning head then? How do you screw it in? Can't seem to work out how a black rapid one would work, looks as thought its one piece?

The BlackRapid FastenR is a solid piece of metal which screws into the tripod socket and stays put. You clip the swivelling toggle attached to the strap through the hole in the FastenR.

That's what I thought, exactly the same as my redsnapper mount. Ummmm I think this could work.

Thanks zeugma

I'd be careful.........the loop in the plate may not be joined in the middle. I think they're only designed for tightening up the bolt, not as a weight bearing bit of kit. Bit risky imho.......

That's true... hadn't thought about that. will contact joe@ redsnapper and get his thoughts. Short of that I might give myself a few hours in the workshop with the metal lathe, and if that dosent work, spend the money :)

As mentioned above, the loop is there to tighten the screw -it wasn't designed to clip a strap to and carry your camera.
It might work but I would say it was a risk.
I know you're trying to save money but something like the B GRIP is ideal for carting your camera about and using it quickly - much better than a loose strap.

i think i will just spend the cash!

can anyone tell me the width of the strap that black rapid use?

The loop on the QR plate screw is not large enough to pass the clip from the rapid strap through, I tried it a few days ago.

Thanks for all the info. Have bitten the bullet and bought an official screw in thingy :) reason for all the questions is that I can't justify the money for black rapid... and have found an alternative, made just as well.... from the same materials but not made for camera gear.. so quarter the price...

Will put a thread up when all the bits arrive! :)

I remembered reading this thread a while ago when I was having the same dilemma, and just thought I'd resurrect it to share my findings after using a sling strap clipped onto the QR plate for a while now.

I've been doing it for a while, using a 5DII and usually a 24-70 or 135mm (nothing bigger/heavier), and a sun-sniper strap, (probably comparable to the Black Rapid RS-7 - it's got a curved type shoulder pad). Whenever I'm using it I've always got one hand on the camera just in case, but I'd do that with any strap really!

In the few months that I've been using this setup, at no point have I seen anything to suggest that the redsnapper QR plate isn't strong enough for my particular setup. There's no sign of fatigue or anything, but I suppose there might be things happening inside that aren't obvious.

What IS obvious though, is the wear to the strap's connector:

Now, most of this was done in just one weekend. Beforehand, there was a little bit of wear, but a weekend of trekking around a welsh mountain did this. I think another weekend and I'd be seriously starting to worry about it's ability to support any weight.

On the bright side, the RS QR plate is made from some seriously tough stuff. There's not even a hint of wear to the loop on the plate, it's still got those pretty sharp square edges that just ate through this connector. A bit of the black coating has been rubbed off, but that's all.

So for now, the sling strap has been resigned to a drawer. I'm searching for a new connector thingy, then I'll adopt this very cunning solution, which still allows the same flexibility:

I dont know about the redsnapper plates but I use a Arca style QR clamp attached to my BR strap - I can then attach/detach from the lens plate.
Attached is a pic of the set-up - I use this with a 7D + 300/2.8 + converter (almost 8 lbs)

Hope this helps to anyone still interested

Be very careful, I'm not sure about the Redsnapper plates but I use Manfrotto - the D-rings are only designed for tightening and only protrude into the thread by a couple of millimetres.

I use the new BR FastenR-T1 with my plates - maybe that would fit a Redsnapper plate too?

Don't have it to hand at the moment, but the BlackRapid R4 strap is about 25mm wide (1 inch in real money), maybe less.
The fitted ConnectR-2 swivels smoothly so no danger of D-ring unscrewing.
I use a FastenR-T1 replacing the standard D-ring screw on a Giottos QR (an ArcaSwiss copy, I think) - permanently attached to camera body.
The Giottos one seemed sturdy enough to me (just very fiddly when clipping & unclipping the strap), until I got a T1 - it's a far better engineered & altogether more confidence inspiring affair - well worth the outlay imho.
Interestingly, it came with a disclaimer stating that BR could not be held responsible for injury or damage through it's use -and no guarantee for materials or workmanship!!
