Well i've managed to access a HOYA UV filter for my standard 18-55mm right before I go away to Egypt (tommorrow night!).
I'm not sure if its of any use to me, basically came on a lens a friend had and doesnt use.

I've had a quick play around with it on and off, however i'm not seeing much of a difference in images with it on and off.

From what I've read up on a UV lens basically they cut down UV light, but are used more for protection.
Is there any more to these? And considering i'm going to egypt, would it be beneficial using one to reduce the chances of sand/dust entering the glass?

Not normally a visually noticeable difference in images but certainly beneficial for lens protection.

Do you have a polarising filter with you as well?

I think it's a good idea, but I've seen comments from others on this site who would disagree.

No I dont have a polorising one, this is possibly my next purchase before I move to a new lens as it seems to produce effects I love seeing on other pictures ( deeper skys being one! ).

Are they generally always around the same price bracket? (£50ish i've seen in shops).

I'd Love to get one before I go away but in all honesty I wasnt expecting amazing results for my Holiday as i've not been around dslr long! So i'm not sure the filter will make and break my takings just yet.. however I could be wrong..
