UV Filter?

Could someone recommend a make of filter for a Canon 100-400 zoom 77mm?

As a means of protecting the front element of the lens you mean? An ordinary skylight filter should suffice Hoya Kood are good makes.

True. Though the problem is not limited to the Canon 100-400L. Long focal length magnifies the slightest imperfection, causing loss of sharpness and strange patterns in out of focus backgrounds. This particular lens gets reported most because it's been such a big seller for many years.

The 100-400 comes with a very good lens hood that offers great protection.

i think there more clear than hoya, and clean easier too

It seems that hood on, no filter, and take care. Except perhaps by the sea. Fit a skylight filter.
 
I like to smear Vaseline on my front element, then slap a couple of rolls of cling film around it. Does the job.*

* or I might just like to use a lens hood.

That's a reasonable approach. Always use a hood, and maybe add a protection filter if there's salt spray/spume or a lot of sand/dust blowing around. Good - expensive - filters are generally better, but avoid the bargain basement ones like the plague!

If conditions are really harsh, you might think about protecting the camera too.
