After a lot of research, I have narrowed my choice of tripod to include the Vanguard alta pro 283 with their bbh300 ball head. I mainly do macro, but would also like to use it with my 600mm f4 for birds, with a gimbal. Does anyone have experience of this tripod? Especially with big lenses. Thanks

Not the model you are considering, but I recently bought a Vanguard Auctus Plus 323 and for me its an excellent bit of kit. I wanted it for home use of wildlife in the garden and as it comes with disc, spiked and normal feet, the discs are excellent for the tripod being left up on kitchen tiled floor. It's also got a geared column which again is excellent for my use. I teamed it with a Sunwayfoto DB44 ballhead. Its a heavy item so not sure it would be good for lugging around.

I looked at some others, Redsnapper, Mafrotto 055 etc, but the Vanguard suits me best. It's a good saving also over RRP @ currently £99. I paid £134 for mine. >http://www.wexphotographic.com/buy-vanguard-auctus-plus-323at-aluminium-tripod/p1577605

In summary, I would have no concerns of buying a Vanguard tripod.

Thanks Simon. I'd never heard of them before, so it's good to know quality is up there.

Think I've settled on the Manfrotto 057, with their Q6 ball head and a Benro gimbal - about £100 more expensive overall but feel more comfortable that it can hold the weight of the 600mm + 1DX.
