Hi,

I'm not sure if this should go in here or in Talk Basics so please move if needed.

I've just bought my daughter a cheap camcorder for her birthday and it's just arrived. On closer inspection of the camcorder it says that it has 4X digital zoom (it doesn't have an optical zoom) and the front of the lens surround also states that is goes from f/2.8 to f/5.3.

I'm wondering why the aperture would change if it only offers digital zoom?

Is that the minimum and maximum, as opposed to max at each of two zoom extremities?

Cheap lens. It costs a lot to have a lens that can zoom at the same aperture.

Its not really zooming though if it has no optical zoom so it wouldn't affect it in that way.

oh silly me, thought it was 2.8 to 3.5, but still 2 stops is hardly a huge range.

It will adjust the aperture automatically depending upon the amount of light entering the lens. It will not be manually adjustable
