Versa vs. fixed apex tripod

I'm thinking of buying a RRS tripod but am confused.


RRS has two different versions of each tripod....a fixed apex vs. versa apex version.
I never shoot panoramas nor do I shoot video. So is the fixed apex version for me?

The RRS Versa versions are more stable and versatile with their wide (and removable) top plate which positions the apex (the position of least movement) of the legs higher, and roughly where the camera sits. The removable top-plate allows more options for heads, centre-column etc. They're basically Gitzo Systematic clones.

The non-Versa Mk2 tripods are basically a more compact, slimmer design when folded down for easier carrying. Looks like there's no centre-column option though.
