The inbuilt microphones on dSLRs are all pretty poor. The trouble with a decent external microphone, like the Rode VideoMic is that it's large and fragile and not easy to transport. So when I've taken video on the spur of the moment I've not had the Rode and had to use the internal mic 
But now there's another option. The Gembird Mic-222 costs just £2.28 - yup, less than the price of a pint. Now, for that price it ain't gonna be super quality. But it is supposed to be better than the internal mic (although mono only). And that price means I can buy a few and distribute them in various bags. Next time I want to shoot video and I haven't got the Rode then I'll have one of these to use instead.
