Video Camera for skiing

Hi

I hope this is an appropriate post and someone can help. I will be working as a ski instructor in France next winter and am looking for a suitable relatively cheap (i.e. about £200) video camera to use to film the people I am teaching so as to allow me to demonstrate what they are doing right and wrong and how they improve day-to-day.

The video camera has to be fairly light, should be relatively easy to use (e.g. one-handed, in an ideal world, with gloves on, etc.) have auto-focus and reasonable zoom capability and must be capable of working at low temperatures.

The clips will be downloaded to a laptop where I can use VLC media player to slow-down, speed-up and pause the display.

As I said, I hope this is the right place to post this enquiry - if not, my apologies, I will get my coat and leave quietly.

I would think that the VholdR cameras are exactly what you're looking for. I know they've got a new 720p "contourHD" one out which is $299 in the US, might be coming into your territory. they're made out of solid metal and are designed for exactly what you want.

Thanks for that Dave; I had considered a headcam and know someone who has used one for skiing and surfing.

The shots I have seen seem not to be very clear (the clips on the ContourHd site seem to bear this out) and I don't think any headcam has a means of zooming . . . I am sure that someone will now tell me that I am wrong. On the other hand, it does appear to be VERY easy to use.


The CountourHD is available in the UK - at about £300; I think that it is available in the US at $300 :thumbsdown:

no, it doesn't have any zoom functionality, but hey, whaddya want for $299.

it's rough and tumble proof, HD, easy to use even with gloves, comes with a variety of mounts for attaching to you or your kit and they encourage you to beat it up a bit.

the kinda cams with zoom functionality I would imagine would fail their guarantee as soon as you stepped out of the chalet?
