Video on a DSLR???

Can someone please explain to me why???

If it was such a great idea why donot all camera's have it.
Is it really that good compared to say a proper video camera??? If not then what is the point.

I like my DSLR because it is a DSLR and its for taking pictures, then I like my sony video camera because well its does what it says on the tin, takes video. It also takes still but they are well cr*p for a reason its a video camera,

The new 550D has video and well I am baffled.

Not dissing the camera here. but just want some ones point of view to it.
 
Digital compacts have had video for years, and I guess many people who upgraded wondered why dslr's didn't have it - similar to live view.

Like it or loathe it, its here to stay, and I've seen some stunning footage produced on dslrs who can take advantage of waffer thin DOF.
 
its no big deal to me - however thats what video cameras are for!

i personally wouldnt be swayed by that when buying a dslr! :)
 
They dont include it on some because they are simply holding back technology to make more money. EG: Nikon can charge more for the D3s because it has video and better high iso. If they included the video technology on the D3, then some people wouldnt bother upgrading from a D3 to a D3s.

I guess some DSLRs are great for video, (5D II) a lot of professional film makers use it. But for just general videoing it can be a bit annoying.. some can suffer from the "jello effect", the microphones are also pretty poor. Although, if your into more artistic, professional film making and want the DoF and interchangeable lenses, then DSLR would be the way forward (without forking out tens of thousands on a red camera or the like)

Because some people like to do videos.

From a 5D mark II you don't get the control, but you get the video quality of a £75.000 video camera. I think that's good enough and it doesn't hurt to have it.

For me the advantage is using all that amazing glass to produce stunning videos. Shallow DOF, super wide angles, amazing bokeh... basically television quality pictures on a consumer budget.
 
I really cannot understand why some people have such an issue with video in DSLRs. I personally think it is awesome!

Don't like it? Don't use it.
 
as an aside.. has anyone used the video on a 1dmkIV yet.. I honestly wouldnt even know how to turn it on :(

No, but the stuff I have seen shot on it is amazing. It will soon be a point where you need to shoot still and video at most things the average pro does. Obv not so much sports and music, but this "convergence" buzz word keeps getting louder. Really more people should be embracing this technology or they may find themselves left behind. (not aimed at you at all Kipax)
