I know how to use to the camera's video, but tips on techniques for getting good results would be helpful

Never used my D7000 in video mode but I stumbled upon some short films of the D7000 on You Tube that may be of some help to you.

Put it on a tripod!

Think carefully about audio, use an appropriate mic. This doesn't just mean sticking a rode videomic on the hotshow and assuming that it will solve all.
