Vinyl on a roll

I'm thinking of getting rolls of vinyl (black / white) for high and low key work, but am curious as to how it behaves when you unroll it, does it last flat or tend to curl at the edges?
 
Hi Chris ....

I use Black, White and Chroma in my studio and it lays perfectly flat when rolled out ... mine was from Bessel studio lighting UK ..

I'd need to unroll, use then roll back up for next time rather than unroll and leave it, so hopefully it will behave the same.

Do you use the glossy black? How effective is it? Do you get lots of unwanted reflections?

I'm thinking so long as I buy the quality stuff rather than the thin ebay stuff, I should be ok.
 
I'd never use black vinyl as its just too reflective. You want some kind of material really.
 
i use matt finish vinyl with little or no reflections. The vinyl from Bessel is around 400g weight .... its thick enough for my studio work. I use 3m x 6m rolls so if you go for heavier grade vinyl the weight per roll will substantially increase. My rolls are fitted on sturdy manfrotto auto poles and expans. The rolls i use which have alloy cores are as heavy as i would like to use ...

I've got Bessel black and white vinyls. I'm very much a novice with studio work, but here's a before and after example with Bessel black.

The brush strokes listed are to darken the background around the model and in the gap through her arm.
 
I use a black vinyl for all our studio event jobs.

I purchased mine from ViewFinder.. it has a matt side and a less matt side, both of which are fine.

The vinyl gives you the opportunity to use gels to light the background which is much more difficult if you use material.

Rolls up and lays down perfect ... no curls anywhere ... however you might need to watch what flooring you are using under it ... i use dense office grade capet tiles with little or no give in them. However the vinyl could mark if the subjects / models are wearing pointed heels on their shoes etc ..

Thats a good point, it will mostly be used over wooden flooring, but if over carpet, I'll have to make sure it's barefoot
 
Carpet doesn't affect or damage it.

16 proms and hundreds of stupidly high heels on deep pile carpet this summer, and not a mark or dink.
