We have Virgin TV and after not doing it for quite a while I've now been forced into upgrading (Upgrade? Really?) to 360 and as usual anything like this annoys me as it always involves using a tablet or smartphone and entering never ending numbers of passwords and scanning QR codes.

Once it was "upgraded" after failing to do it several times I was faced with a menu and an annoying 360 announcement at x2 volume of everything else. Googling tells me you can't disable this thing and best advice seems to be to select a channel and never turn the box off. We have two boxes and the one upstairs was supposed to update at the same time but of course it didn't so I had to go through the same rigmarole again.

I do detest a lot of modern tech and I hate the fact that I can't watch TV without a smart phone and multiple passwords and QR codes. Wouldn't it be wonderful if some tech like TV's were dumb and you just turned them on and tuned them in? Wouldn't it be great if TV's didn't listen to your conversations, record them and sell them to the highest bidder? Wouldn't it be great we weren't seen as data to be harvested and sold?

I don't know how many new boxes we've had from Virgin over the years. This time we just got new remotes. I do wish we could go date farming and streaming free.

Anyone else been through this and seeing it as an upgrade?

I totally agree our latest massive t.v is a total mystery to me I can turn it on after that I leave it to the wife to use . The controller is a scroll type and there’s an arrow thingy on the screen that jumps about like jimmy cricket ,and the sound quality is crap , but she bought the bloody thing .
P.S the smart t.v in our caravan is even worse I think the devil invented it :headbang:

Do agree we have a smart TV and the menu for things like Netflix is just obtuse and annoying
We have Virgin for fibre broadband but didn’t go for the Virgin TV thing glad we didn’t by the sound of it
I have a 4K blue ray player and HiFi setup in my man cave in the spare room, much prefer just to put a blue ray in and watch that

After a day or so with it I can find my way around and do everything but that's not to say I like it. We've had some sort of cable since the Comcast days and for me every new box and menu system has been a step away from any real attempt to be intuitive or clear. This latest one is a backward step for me and it's a mess, it's a mix of tiles which I've never liked and drop down menus, IMO it's a mess and the screeching at loud volume lady in the 360 ad is a PITA which apparently can't be turned off so everything must be done to avoid ending up on that screen.

I don't like entering my email address and Microsoft password and I don't like having to use QR codes just to use a TV but this is where we're at. I really don't know how some people manage and maybe they don't. Another annoyance was that the box powered off so I had to go into the settings and change the sleep time from whatever it was to 24h. There's no option to turn the sleep option off altogether. Yet another annoyance is that whenever these updates happen you lose any recordings and I'm sure this could be avoided if there was a willingness to do so.

Googling lead me to the opinion that this update is to cut down on engineer visits. Apparently if anything goes wrong they can send software updates on line or in the case of a hardware failure they can send you new stuff and leave you to plug it in and do the updates. They're been heading this way for a while so I can believe it. Sorry to know that others feel as I do but this is the way the world is going... unintuitive tech which demands ever more of your personal information but which saves the mega corp money.

Well it literally took me 10 seconds to find out how to turn the announcement voice off.

We must be talking about different things as googling tells me the one I'm talking about can not be turned off, only avoided.
