Yes
I think i have a virus on my Acer desktop ,what can i do to confirm wether i have or not .

First time i noticed things weren't right vertical lines appeared on screen and the fonts weren't complete, as in only half of each letter was showing and the whole screen was jerking .Then the second time my screen went a solid light blue colour ,rebooted desktop each time and it went to safe mode start up .

Any ideas people :)

The vast majority of "virus" attacks are little more than corrupted Windows installations. Do you actually have anti virus software on the computer?

You sure this is not a monitor issue, i.e do you have another monitor you can plug into to test?

Have you done a full AV scan on the PC? Free software like AVG would be a good start if you have not.

There are many other things you can run but I'll leave that to those more qualified than I to suggest!

Good luck

Al

That does sound like a hardware problem. However, to check to see whether or not you have picked up some malware, download malwarebytes and run a full scan.

second a scan wont hurt malwarebytes or superantispyware
if you not got a AV Avira free and Avast free are good freebies

if they find anything when cleaned boot in safe mode and scan again

I've found antivir the best free av program. Also download ccleaner, which will clean all the crap off your pc. Running something like spyware blaster makes sense too as it stop spyware being installed.

its not a virus the blue screen before it rebooted is the dreaded bsod(blue screen of death)..

so it sounds to me like its either a heat issue or a hardware problem...

does it do it all the time?? and if so from start up or after a while?

Sounds like you may have two issues...

The first sounds like a hardware issue with the lines going down the screen etc.
Check all cables between the monitor and the base unit to make sure they are all seated correctly

The second sounds like either a hardware issue or a corrupted Windows installation.

If it only boots to safe mode, try safemode with networking support so you can get on the internet and download a free antivirus.

Download and run both AGV Free and something like Malwarebytes
You probably dont have a virus but its worth checking and could be a quick win before you have to try something drastic like reinstalling Windows etc.

What version of Windows do you have are there may be other things to try before reinstalling Windows?

Rite ...i've swapped monitors.I uninstalled AVG AV ,installed AVAST AV ,installed Ccleaner ,done a full scan and ran the Ccleaner ,3 infected files found on scan now repaired .

Just before i finnished typing this reply the same bloody thing happened again ,each time i reboot DT it goes to the windows error recovery start ,where i have a choice to start up normally or in the other safe mode options .

HELP!!!!!!!!!!! the window is open and i'm about to launch this bloody thing oot the window :D

Try using Avira, I have found it does a better job than AVAST. I still use Avast as the free version has an email scanner.

Yes you can. But why do you think it will work when all the other things haven't?

You could have reinstalled windoze by now and have been clear of the problem.

What OS are you using?
If it is Vista then you can turn off the Automatic restart so that you get a chance to read the BSOD.
Start / Control Panel / System & Maintenance / System / Advanced System Settings
Under Startup and Recovery click on Settings and under System Failure untick the Automatically Restart box.

When the BSOD next appears make a note of the message in capitals near the top then search on the internet to see what could cause that particular problem.

I had a similar problem but kept getting different messages, I re-installed Windows twice but it did not help. I then looked at all the possible causes for the BSOD and tried all the suggested solutions which I could carry out myself.
After removing and re-inserting the RAM the problem was solved.

I was wondering if it could be your graphics card?

It would be worthwhile checking both the card, and your RAM, are correctly seated.

If it's out of warranty and you're ok with these things, open the case up and check to see if all the fans are working. It may be as simple as the fan on the gfx card is goosed or even the heatsinks are clogged up with stuff.

I stripped off the cases pulled the ram ,cleared the heatsinks because they were clogged up (used hoover:D)and touch wood all seems fine .

A big thanks to everyone for your input

Spoke to bloody soon here i go again!! desktop crashing again ,more blue screen looks like the PC doc i think :( lost all patience now and i'm knackered

Did you check the fans were working? Still sounds like hardware, probably gfx (onboard or card)
Had similar with my laptop, vertical lines then a white screen, needed a new motherboard as the gfx was onboard.

Just checked if both fans were working , Fan on gforce graffic card's going slow and making a humming noise ,am guessing thats my problem .I think looking at it ,the cards separate from motherboard thankfully .

Looks like your on the money Davie ... big thanks

Cough, cough!

I'd make an appointment for the doc if i was you :D sorry i meant to get back to you honest :)

As i'm typing this i'm watching the graphic card fan getting slower and slower , now the bloody things taken off and it's stopped buzzing :cuckoo:
